Maine
ENE was incorporated in Maine in 1998 and regularly represents environmental concerns at the Maine Legislature and agencies such as the Public Utilities Commission, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Maine Forest Service. In addition to working with policy makers, advocates and industry representatives on the state's climate action plan and energy reforms, ENE is exploring the role of Maine's unique forest resource in climate change solutions. Energy
Securing a sustainable and affordable energy supply for Maine’s homes and buildings is one of the state’s top priorities and biggest challenges, so one of ENE’s advocacy goals for Maine is to advance an energy reform platform as part of the state’s environmental and economic policy agenda. Remarkable progress has been made over the past few years. For example, ENE worked in to include reforms to energy resource planning and efficiency investments in the recent cap and trade bill (LD 1851). [Read more about Maine Energy Reform]
Climate Action
ENE was an official stakeholder in the Maine state climate planning process and has advocated for several pieces of legislation and regulatory reforms emerging from the state’s Climate Action Plan. ENE also played a leading role in helping shape the state’s rules regarding implementation of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI),and we recently released an assessment of the amount of greenhouse gases that would be produced by the Plum Creek Timber Company's mega-resort planned for Maine's northern woods. Forestry & Biofuels
ENE and the Maine Forest Service are exploring the potential for increased carbon sequestration through new approaches to forest management in Maine. This effort is examining the biological potential for carbon sequestration and the potential for markets to support silvicultural practices to reduce GHG levels, increase yields and quality of timber and provide enhanced and diversified revenue streams to landowners while improving forest health.
